We are delighted to share with you, the online release of “Lady Oriole”, the Young Screenwriter 2024 winner.
Lady Oriole is a touching coming of age short film based on the winning treatment by PQA Wickford student, Kinara. Blending Montserrat folklore and culture to tell the story of Mercy, a young girl grieving the loss of her beloved Caribbean grandmother. When Mercy discovers her late grandmothers journal, it reveals more than she could ever have imagined. As Mercy learns more about her grandmothers legacy, she also finds the inner strength and courage to bring her family together in a touching tribute to the woman they have all lost.




Lady Oriole stars PQA Cambridge student Hephzibah, represented by Quirky Kidz, and was directed by PQA alumni and Into Film One To Watch winner Eden Quine-Taylor. Kinara attended the shoot, shadowing Eden and experiencing first hand what goes into making a short film with a professional crew. She was also accompanied by two fellow PQA Wickford students who assisted heads of department during the shoot and we even roped in Kinara’s mum to voice Mercy’s grandmother in what became a PQA family production.


The Young Screenwriter competition is open to all PQA students. It challenges them to write a one page treatment for a short film, outlining their idea for plot and character/s.
